ROSSO NORDOFF ROBBINS GIG 30/3/11

This was done to as a goodbye to an old mate, DAVE DEE, he was the North West Representative for Nordoff Robbins and a great guy. With his family it was our way of saying bon voyage. Dave had great history, first with DAVE DEE,DOZY,BEAKY, MICK and TITCH. A huge star in the Sixties and Seventies then solo; then becoming Head of A&R at Warner Brothers Records - he was infamously the man who turned The Sex Pistols down twice! When I asked him why he simply said, "cause they were shit, Hooky."

JImi Hendrix supported his band on his first tour and he loved telling the story about how he threw away Jimi's broken guitars. JImi would smash one a show and then leave them all over the place backstage. Dave got fed up of the mess and threw them in the bin! Again I asked why..."I hate a mess!" he said, adding, "wish I had them now though."

Dave was great with me when the group split, a split like that is generally recognised in medical circles as a major bereavement with a lot of psychological consequences. Dave's advice generally was, “FUCK 'EM! Before they FUCK U!” Which, whilst not medical, always spurred me on and made me smile. It really was a pleasure to do this for him. I was a bit surprised at the price of the ticket but was confidently told by Howard Sharrock, Dave’s successor, that it would not be a problem and - lo and behold - it sold out in an hour!

Obviously our fans like sitting down to watch us with a nice three course meal in a lovely restaurant - seems obvious really I suppose. It's like posh chicken-in-a-basket - surely the peak of anyone's career? They have since told me they could have sold it 6 times over humph! A new career beckons? As support we had a young local singer songwriter called Kristy - her first gig. Plus Girl Peculiar; Ed Blaney, as Master of Ceremonies; artist Danny Cawley; poet Mike Garry and Clint Boon, on the wheels of steel. Clint was also going to sing Dave's song ‘The Legend of Xanadu’ as our tribute, but due to some sad circumstances, he passed it on to me. My sympathies and condolences go out to him and his family R.I.P. Cyril Boon.

Now I had not realised just how good a singer Dave was until I came to sing this. It was tough! I was terrified, to say the least. But the lads did a great job transcribing it and though we decided against using Dave's whip (check it out on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuJ4GIXB5Uc) for health and safety reasons it sounded great musically. Thanks Nat, Jack, Leadfoot and Andy. The whole evening went very, very well. The raffle and the auction did great - I even raised £860 with my Bass lesson! Thanks Mrs Hook for that idea - that will be an interesting hour.

We played well. Bruce Mitchell provided the stage and PA and ended up with a very interesting middle-aged mosh pit in Rosso! Even Rowetta made it across town for her numbers, (thanks, love). The staff joined in too. We encored with ‘…Xanadu’ and with the aid of Kirsty and Leadfoot on vocals, plus a hefty dose of adrenalin, it sounded GREAT! Which made me very happy! (Save us a seat, Dave). Hopefully I won't see you too soon but one near the bar please mate. Cheers, Hooky.

Thanks to REBECCA and JESSICA HOOK! JAMES MASTERS! ALISON BELL! HOWARD SHARROCK! JO and OLIVIA HARMAN ! GORDON ROXON! MANCHESTER CONFIDENTIAL! MARK GARDNER! ALL AT ROSSO! PHIL MURPHY! ROWETTA! STEVE JONES! THE LIGHT! KRISTIE and NICKI LINUS! GIRL PECULIAR and ED BLANEY! CLINT BOON! MIKE GARRY! DANNY CAWLEY! HARRY GOODWIN and JOHN O'CONNOR! NORDOFF ROBBINS! MANY MANY GENEROUS OTHERS! THANKS HOOKY
