DEN HAAG 28/5/2011

Now this is odd! Sort of retracing the steps of the first European tour we did as Joy Division, immortalised in CONTROL. A thoroughly dismal affair that tour was - nearly put me off touring for life! Definitely a story for another book!

I must admit I am much happier and stronger now, so it's back to UNKNOWN PLEASURES and great to be rocking out again! We are met at the airport by the wonderful V - what a hero! Think of Saxon, but cool. He is supplying the back line and driving us around - a top geezer. We drive to Den Haag. Nice trip and the place we are to play is where I DJed for the Dutch premiere of CONTROL. Anton (Corbjin) invited me to DJ the party in his home town. It was WILD to be introduced first to the Danish Royal Family and then RUTGER HAUER! WOW! I was open-mouthed. I was ably assisted by ANNIK on the decks - a TOP night. I remember at the end he gave me an umbrella!? And when you opened it, it had a map of Den Haag inside it. Must get some done for Salford! Nevertheless, it’s now a prized possession.

Very kindly the venue has arranged for a recording of the Man U v Barca match as it clashes with our gig perfectly - too perfectly! Jack living in abject fear of someone shouting out the score! The gig goes great, great response great sound too. Then the whole evening is ruined as we watch the match. Ah well, win some lose some! I leave the boys to terrorise the city and walk back to the hotel, cursing the great footballers of Barcelona. Adios. Hooky.

THE EFFENAAR EINDHOVEN 29/5/2011

The next day we are all back to normal, except for KEHOE obviously ha ha! The ride to Eindhoven flashes by...V needs to stop by his warehouse and when we go to his lock up and see his collection of vintage amplifiers and equipment, we are all open mouthed with jealousy. What a collection! He is a great guy and takes us to what he thinks is obviously our hotel. It is beautiful - 5 star plus. He assures me it is ours though. Free aperitifs and sweets at reception, bowls of fruit, sweet music blaring, Spa etc… it's great! But sadly they do not have our reservation and we are sent out into the cold! To the doss pit down the road. That's more like it! We can relax now!

The Effenaar is well known in rock ‘n' roll - it was one of the only places Joy Division played on that European tour that was filmed - very rare. The guy is holding it to ransom from us, although he did agree to let a small portion appear on The Joy Division documentary for a large portion, if you know what I mean! Maybe one day he will change his mind. A great shame as we let him film us as a favour. That Rob Gretton was very trusting indeed.

The venue is huge, all metal and very high ceiling, but sounds very good. That does not change later and a great gig ensues. We rock the Effenaar 30 years on! Nice to see Fat Alex and a few Vikings. I'd heard on the grapevine they are not enamoured by what we are doing, so it's nice to see them. We pack down and I leave the boys in a bar with the newly won-over Vikings. Nice night! Uneventful trip to Amsterdam - the boys are very quiet. But recover well - a nice foray into Holland! See you in December. Regards. Hooky.

Hi Hooky,

THE Eindhoven gig was awesome! Me and my friends (all 50+) enjoyed everything minute of it. We can hardly wait seeing you again in december. Where on earth did you get these musicians? The band was fucking great!

Eh, sorry, too fast. Hit the send button too early...A day later I heard you and the boys visited the Ramblers bar, just after the concert. Playing pool. We have missed that unfortunately. Anyway, thanks for the fantastic evening and CU in december!
